Describing the Basotho is difficult when one is Mosotho. However, there are a number of characteristics that have been used by visitors to describe the Basotho People and these include warm, open, proud, independent, happy, generous, laid back, and friendly. We would encourage visitors to Lesotho to send us their experiences of the Basotho. The traditional greeting of ‘Khotso’ or ‘peace’ symbolises their peaceful nature. They speak the native language, Sesotho although a fair percentage of the population speak good English too. The Basotho are primarily rural, living primarily in the mountains and outside the major towns. They can often be seen walking through the rugged terrain and often times in harsh weather conditions with what appears to be relative ease, and most men will use the traditional Basotho Pony as their form of transport. These ponies are sturdy and sure-footed animals and ideal for getting around the mountains and valleys that make up Lesotho. Notwithstanding this, and given the strong Christian influence, the Basotho are strongly influenced by their traditional beliefs and customs. There is a strong belief in the family structure with the utmost respect for the elders. The standard of education in Lesotho is generally one of the highest in Africa, primarily because of the influence of the Roman Catholic church, and the abundance of Roman Catholic missions throughout the country – and hence the general proficiency in the English language. |
