The terrain in Lesotho lends itself to numerous off-road motoring activities. Principle amongst these is trips in 4-wheel drive vehicles, quad Bikes and scramblers. These can be supplied by local operators, but it may be best in some cases for visitors to bring their own equipment. There is a local Vehicle rental company that can also rent out 4 wheel drive vehicles, and can supply drivers, should that be preferred. It is advisable that visitors stay to established roads and tracks for their own safety.

Travelling around Lesotho in off-road vehicles is often the best way for visitors ro experience its various attractions, be there geographic, cultural, historical, etc. There ar a number of ideal camping sites allowing visitors the opportunity to both traverse the country using these vehicles, and to stay in interesting locations. Should visitors chose to set up camp in the highlands, it is imperative that contact is made with and permission sought from the local chief of the area.  

Those engaging in these activities need to be sure that they are either seasoned participants, or have had extensive training. The terrain can be difficult and in some cases extremely dangerous, especially during the rainy or winter seasons.

Lesotho has been and is host to the Roof of Africa Rally, which takes place every year. This event takes its participants (some of the world’s top off-road drivers and bikers through some of the toughest terrain.
