Pony trekking or horse riding is an important activity for visitors to Lesotho. They will get to opportunity to ride the famous Basotho ponies that can be found all over the country, whilst experiencing the outdoors and its mountainous terrain. The animals are sure-footed and experienced in traversing the valleys and mountains of Lesotho, and allow their riders the best views of the countryside.

These trips can vary between an hour and a couple of hours, to a couple of days. The latter however tends to be more strenuous, especially to those who have not ridden horses. As the saddles are often supplied by the owners of the ponies, they are also not necessarily the most comfortable, especially for more than a couple of hours. Still, one of the most exciting activities, allowing visitors to see the country, and to meet and engage with the Basothos in their local villages.

Today, practically all the horses and ponies used here belong to the various villages and the costs of hiring these goes back directly to the communities, without middlemen taking commission, etc. This is another way that visitors can assist the communities, which so desperately need the income.
